Observe - Wastewater Treatment

Every day, many litres of water go down the drains in our homes.  You might take a bath or shower, brush your teeth, flush the toilet, pour cooking water down the kitchen sink, wash the dishes, and do the laundry.  All that water as well as what is going down the drain with the water is called wastewater.  It is water that has been used and cannot just be drained into a river, lake, or ocean.  It is collected and cleaned so that it is safe for plants, animals, and people to use again.  The process to clean water is large so that it is safe to use again.  To conserve the water you use in your home is important.  People need to be careful about how much water they use.  Being careful about what we wash down the drain is important, too.  As you learned earlier, toxic waste products should not be poured down the sink.
