Unit 1

Functions

Introduction

Lesson 1.1: Radical Functions

The simplest and most common radical is the square root, and the square root function is found on most basic calculators. In Math 10C and Math 20-1, you worked with radicals by simplifying radical expressions, performing operations with radicals, and solving radical equations. In Math 30-1, the focus is on radical functions.

In Lesson 1.1, you will

  • identify the graph of a radical function,
  • sketch the graph of a radical function,
  • determine the domain and range of a radical function,
  • understand the relationship between roots, «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-intercepts, and the graph of a radical function, and
  • solve radical equations using graphs.

Coming into this Lesson, you should have

  • an understanding of powers and exponents,
  • an understanding of square roots and cube roots,
  • an understanding of functions and equations,
  • the ability to develop a table of values from a function, and
  • the ability to graph using a table of values and technology.
