Unit 3

Transformations

Introduction

Lesson 3.1: Transforming Functions

In Lesson 3.1, you will

  • explore translations of graphs,
  • stretch graphs,
  • describe the effects on a graph when a constant is added to or subtracted from the equation of the corresponding function,
  • describe the effects on a graph when the corresponding function is multiplied by a constant,
  • and reflect graphs in the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»- and «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»y«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axes.

Coming into this Lesson, you should have

  • an understanding of functions and function notation,
  • knowledge of how to determine the domain and range of functions,
  • the ability to sketch the graph of a function from its equation, and
  • the ability to graph using technology.
