Part 3.1B corresponds to section 1.2, starting on page 16 of your Pre-Calculus 12 textbook.
In Part 3.1A, you learned the term translation means to shift or slide a graph without turning or rotating, and without changing its shape.
In this section, you will learn that reflections change the orientation of a graph and stretches alter the shape of a graph.
In this section, you will learn that reflections change the orientation of a graph and stretches alter the shape of a graph.
Reflections
You are familiar with mirrors and their reflections. Mathematical reflections are not much different. In math, each point on an original graph is reflected across a line to create an image point. The point closest to the line on the original graph will be the point closest to the line in the reflected image.
In the diagram shown, the black graph has been reflected across the
«math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨
xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle
mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axis to become the red graph.
Notice the two graphs have the same
shape, but have a different orientation.
The points on the black graph closest to the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axis correspond to the points on the red graph closest to the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axis.
The points on the black graph closest to the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axis correspond to the points on the red graph closest to the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-axis.

Like translations, reflections do not change the shape of the graph. However, they do change its orientation.
