Part 3.1D corresponds to section 1.4, starting on page 44 of your Pre-Calculus 12 textbook.

To invert means to reverse something. For example, to invert a cup means to turn it over so the bottom is at the top and the top is at the bottom.

A function can be inverted as well.

In the inverse of a function, the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values are exchanged with the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»y«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values for each set of coordinates.

For example, on the graph of the function «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», the following points exist.

«math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math» «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced»«mrow»«mi»x«/mi»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mi»y«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math»

On the graph of the inverse of the function, «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»g«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», the corresponding points are as follows.

The points «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mfenced»«mrow»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mn»6«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»0«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mfenced»«mrow»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mn»4«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»4«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»0«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»4«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»2«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»2«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», and «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»6«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»2«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math» lie on the graph of the relation shown.
a.
List the corresponding points of its inverse, and draw the graph of the inverse on the same grid.
b.
Is there a line of reflection? Explain.
c.
Do both graphs represent functions? Explain.
d.
State any invariant points.

a.
The points on the graph of the inverse are «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»0«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mn»6«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»4«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mn»4«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»4«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»0«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»2«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»2«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»2«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»6«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math».

b.
There is a reflection line. It is diagonal and crosses through the invariant point of «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»2«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»2«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math». The equation of the line of reflection is «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»x«/mi»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math».

c.
The original set of points represent a function. For every «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-value, there is only one «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»y«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-value. This can be confirmed with the vertical line test. If a vertical line is drawn through any part of the graph, it will only cross the graph once.

The set of points on the inverse do not represent a function.

Some «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»x«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-values have more than one «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»y«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math»-value associated with them.

d.
The point «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mfenced»«mrow»«mn»2«/mn»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mn»2«/mn»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mstyle»«/math» is invariant because it remains unchanged under the transformation.
A function and its inverse are always reflections in the line «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»x«/mi»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math». Invariant points lie on the reflection line.

If the function is «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», then the inverse of the function may or may not be a function.

The notation «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«msup»«mi»f«/mi»«mrow»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mn»1«/mn»«/mrow»«/msup»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» can be used to represent the inverse of «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math». The «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mo»-«/mo»«mn»1«/mn»«/mstyle»«/math» is not an exponent and «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«msup»«mi»f«/mi»«mrow»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mn»1«/mn»«/mrow»«/msup»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«mo»§#8800;«/mo»«mfrac»«mn»1«/mn»«mrow»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mi»x«/mi»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mfrac»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math». The context will help you decide what the superscript represents.
