Unit 3

Transformations

Investigation

So far, you’ve transformed points and generic functions. Many of the same ideas can be used to transform specific functions.

Open Transforming Functions. If you are unable to access the applet, try entering “transforming functions” into a search engine, and take a look at the first few pages or videos.

  1. Predict the effects on each function’s graph when «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»a«/mi»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mi»b«/mi»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«mspace width=¨0.33em¨/»«mi»h«/mi»«mi mathvariant=¨normal¨»,«/mi»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» and «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»k«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math» are adjusted.
  2. Use the sliders to check your predictions.
  3. How does the general format «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»a«/mi»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow»«mi»b«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow»«mi»x«/mi»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mi»h«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mo»+«/mo»«mi»k«/mi»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math» compare to the specific format of each of the given functions?
  1. For all of the functions, «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»a«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math» is related to vertical stretches and vertical reflections, «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»b«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math» is related to horizontal stretches and horizontal reflections, «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»h«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math» is related to horizontal translations, and «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»k«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math» is related to vertical translations.
  2. All of the functions are written in the format «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»a«/mi»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow»«mi»b«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow»«mi»x«/mi»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mi»h«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«mo»+«/mo»«mi»k«/mi»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», but instead of the generic function «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mi»f«/mi»«/mstyle»«/math», a specific function is used. For example, in «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»y«/mi»«mo»=«/mo»«mi»a«/mi»«msqrt»«mi»b«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow»«mi»x«/mi»«mo»§#8722;«/mo»«mi»h«/mi»«/mrow»«/mfenced»«/msqrt»«mo»+«/mo»«mi»k«/mi»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math», each parameter is in the same location with respect to the function. You can see the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«msqrt/»«/mstyle»«/math» takes the place of the «math style=¨font-family:Verdana¨ xmlns=¨http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML¨»«mstyle mathsize=¨14px¨»«mrow»«mi»f«/mi»«mfenced»«mrow/»«/mfenced»«/mrow»«/mstyle»«/math».
