4.0.2 Unit Four Concepts and Terms
Unit Question: How has the rejection of liberalism influenced our modern world?
Issue Question: To what extent is resistance to liberalism justified?
In this unit, you will explore the following big ideas based on questions arising from the issue question:
- Many people and their governments rejected the principles of liberalism because they did not see it leading to a better life for their citizens. New ideologies, reflecting a rejection of liberal principles, came into practice in the early 20th Century.
- Regimes can retain their power over the people they govern by many techniques, including those that interfere with their fundamental rights and freedoms.
- Conflict between ideologies has had a powerful influence on our world, including competition for power and influence, military conflict, the build-up of arms, the shaping of national boundaries, and the development of economic prosperity worldwide.
- Some principles of liberalism conflict with deeply held beliefs about collective interest, cooperation, and economic equality. When liberalism is imposed on people against their will, conflicts arise.
