Course Overview
Welcome to Social Studies 5!
There are two parts in Grade Five Social Studies:
- The first one is about the geography, history and people of the regions of Canada. You will learn about the regions one at a time. This part will take up about two thirds of the year’s work.
- The second one is about Canada “growing up” and becoming an independent country. This part will take about one third of the time.
Inquiry
Our Social Studies program is an inquiry program.
Inquire means ask. This means that you will start with questions and find the answers in various ways. You will use the resources listed and any others you may find to inquire to find the answers.
Be sure to ask yourself the Inquiry questions as you go through the resources because you must answer them at the end of the lesson.
If you do not know the answers, go back to the resources to find them, or ask an adult for help.
Don’t let the list of things you don’t know become too long.
At ADLC we believe it is important for students to learn from feedback. Submitting one assignment at a time, allows students to learn from feedback to improve the next lesson.
Bulk submitted assignments will not be marked as one submission. The first lesson will be marked in 3-4 business days. The other bulk submitted assignments will go into the student submission queue to be marked with a turn-around of 3-4 business days each. When assignments are submitted in bulk, there will be no opportunity to add anything that might have been missed, no opportunities for redos and resubmissions, and you will not be able to appeal any grades.
Finally, exams are released to supervisors when all required assignments are submitted and marked. You must allow appropriate time for the assessments to be marked (this is 3-4 business days for each assignment) when planning your exam schedule.
