Atlantic Region


  • The fog was so thick, we could not see the land in New Brunswick.  
  • The beaches squeaked as we rubbed our feet through the red sand in Prince Edward Island.  
  • We saw lots of whales, puffin, and moose in Newfoundland.  
  • We heard a gun fire from the Halifax Citadel Historic Site in Nova Scotia at noon. This tradition dates from 1856 and continues today. 

In Unit 2, you will learn about the geography, climate, natural resources, history, and people of the Atlantic region.

  • Explain how natural resources and the physical geography of the Atlantic Region determine the establishment of communities
  • Tell about Aboriginal cultures and ways of life in this region
  • Tell about the early Francophone settlement of the Atlantic Region, including the story of the Acadians
  • Provide information about the United Empire Loyalists and how their diversity contributed to Canadian diversity
  • Define and use latitude and longitude to describe absolute location on maps
  • Understand how natural resources are used, exchanged, and conserved in this region

Introduction


Much of life in the Atlantic region involves water.  The ocean provides people with food, transportation, and jobs.  Wherever people live in this region, they are never far from the ocean!
