Inquiry

Who were the Loyalists?

The Loyalist American from the Thirteen Colonies does not want to sign an oath, or promise allegiance, to the United States during the rebellion against Britain. He wants to remain loyal to Britain. He is wondering if he should run away from New England (the Thirteen Colonies), where he might be hurt, and escape to Canada. But when he comes to Canada, will he find a job?

The Pausing American Loyalist (A poem revised for students) January 30, 1776.

To sign, or not to sign? That is the question,
Whether it were better for an honest man

to retreat... To fly-- I reckon Not where: And, by that flight, to escape
Feathers and tar, and thousand other ills
That loyalty is heir to: ... To fly-- to want-- To want? Perhaps to starve: Ay, there's the rub!
