Introduction

First Nations people lived in this area long before Europeans came. Their villages of longhouses were not permanent, but they often remained in one place for a few years, growing small areas of corn, beans, and squash as well as fishing the nearby rivers and lakes. First Nations people were also hunter-gatherers. They gathered berries and various plants from the forest and hunted a variety of animals that inhabited the region.
