Inquiry
What were the Royal Proclamations, Quebec Act, and Constitutional Act and how did they affect British, French, Americans, and the First Nations peoples?
In 1763, after Britain won the Seven Years War, King George III passed a law in which he claimed the land in North America for Britain. He would not allow further settlement West of the Appalachian Mountains. This land would be reserved for Native tribes. King George said any land in the West could only be bought by the King and his descendants.
This was important because it rewarded the Native Americans who supported Britain in the war. It made the American colonists, who wanted to settle the West, angry.
In 1774, King George III passed another law, the Quebec Act. It promoted French values in the province of Quebec such as French laws and religious freedom. Meanwhile, King George III was passing the Intolerable Acts which limited the rights of American colonies.
The Americans began a war (1775-1783) called the War of Independence from England. General George Washington was the main American General in this war.
The Americans were the only nation at this time to win a war against the British. Many Loyalists such as Joseph Brant fled to Canada when the Americans won the war. Now, the Canadian British were unhappy because the French majority had different laws than the British.
In 1791, the Constitutional Act split Quebec into two colonies (Upper and Lower Canada). Upper Canada was located around the Great Lakes region (where Ontario is today). Lower Canada was located near the Atlantic Ocean (where Quebec is located today).
