What was the Hudson’s Bay Company? What was life like in and
around the forts?
Because this lesson has lots of material, you will need more than one day to finish it.
Voyageurs were hired by fur trading companies such as the Hudson Bay Company. They were different from coureur de bois in that they were legal employees rather than independent businessmen.
They signed a three year contract and agreed to take care of equipment (canoes) and furs. They worked six days a week, and had pay deducted for packs that were short supplies. They also paid part of their salary into a voyageur's fund.
