The Interior Plains Today

Targets

This lesson is about the Interior Plains today.

Aquifers
One change to the Interior Plains involves aquifers.  What is an aquifer?   An aquifer is an underground layer where the material contains water. If this ground water is fresh water, humans can dig wells for drinking water.

Two human activities that affect aquifers are Alberta's carbon capture program and oil pipelines.

The Keystone Pipeline would connect Alberta to Nebraska.  It is controversial because if there is an oil leak, it could hurt drinking water aquifers. Watch this video.

Alberta also has salt water aquifers. It is capturing carbon from the atmosphere and stores it in its salt water table.  To learn more about Alberta's carbon capture program, watch these videos.
