Course Overview

Welcome to Science 6 Online!

Grade 6 Science is your opportunity to question, to explore, to investigate, to predict, to manipulate, to observe, to describe, and to understand better the world around you. You will build knowledge and develop confidence and skill to become a better problem-solver as you investigate in four topic areas:


  1. Sky Science
  2. Air, Aerodynamics, and Flight
  3. Evidence and Investigation
  4. Trees and Forests

The topics may be completed in any order you feel works best, however it is highly recommended to complete the Sky Science unit in fall and the Trees and Forests unit in spring to accommodate the activities within the units. Most topics should take approximately eight to ten weeks to complete. However, with the help of your teacher, you will set a pace that is appropriate for you.

Pre-Assessment

Prior to starting a unit you will complete the Pre-Assessment activity. This activity is NOT graded. It is simply to help you see what you already know about the topic and to have you start thinking about the topic you will soon study.

Activities
There are three types of activities in each unit:

  • Observe

The Observe activities require you to view a video, read an article, and/or visit a website as you complete a graphic organizer to help you gather information about a certain topic. All the note-taking organizers are saved in your Notebook Folder. These can then be used for all assessments.

  • Discover

The Discover activities require you to complete a task with the information gathered. You might build something, complete a sorting activity, complete a writing activity, or do a research project. These activities help you discover the world around you.

  • Explore

The Explore activities are scientific experiments. You will be asked a question to which you will need to write a hypothesis. Next, you will be guided as you test this hypothesis, make observations and then draw conclusions based on your observations.



Activities
Assessment

You will find various types of assessment of your learning as you work through the units.  Each unit contains an Assessment at the end of each section and one Final Assessment.  These assessments are your opportunity to show your teacher your understanding of the concepts.  Your assessments should be saved to your Notebook Folder. All assessments are submitted to your teacher for marking. Assessments are weighted at 80% of your grade.

Exit Pass

At the end of a small section of work, you will find an Exit Pass. These short and quick activities are sent to your teacher. They allow the teacher to see how you are doing and if you understand the main concepts that are being taught. These are NOT graded but are used to provide information to your teacher that he or she can then use to help you move forward in your learning.
