In science, you can determine what something is by looking at how it affects other things.

  • You can see the trees swaying in the breeze or water rippling on the lake when it is windy.
  • You can see air moving clouds, seeds, or birds from place to place.
  • Air carries the scent of roses or smell of skunk to your nose.
  • Your skin feels changes in air temperature.
  • You can blow up a balloon or put air in your bicycle tires so you know air must take up space.

You may not be able to see air, but you can certainly see the effects of air in many ways.

The Wind

I saw you toss the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky;
And all around I heard you pass,
Like ladies' skirts across the grass--
        O wind, a-blowing all day long,
        O wind, that sings so loud a song!

I saw the different things you did,
But always you yourself you hid.
I felt you push, I heard you call,
I could not see yourself at all--
        O wind, a-blowing all day long,
        O wind, that sings so loud a song!
