Leccion 1.4 Making the Sounds

Introduction

Spanish-speaking students have their own texting language just like we do in English.
Here are some of the letters that are sent as shortcuts while texting for words in Spanish.

Do you know how those letters are pronounced in Spanish? Watch the video for an introduction of the names of the letters in Spanish  - press pause to say the letters out loud and then press play to see if you got it right.

The speaker on the first example (ak) says "acá" in the recording but it is written "aquí" when you click play to hear it - there are two ways to say here - aquí and acá - acá is more casual/slang.

Read these letters in English aloud:

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, O

You probably naturally said the names of the letters - as in - you read the alphabet. .
Can you now say the sounds these letters make aloud in English?

Now, look at the same letters above as you listen to the pronunciation - or the sound they produce -  in Spanish.

What you hear this time, is the name of letter - as in the alphabet - that you would use to spell out a word - look at the letters below as you listen.

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, O

Did you notice something different? Did you understand the pronunciation?

Most of the letters of the Spanish alphabet are similar to the letters of the English alphabet. However, when you pronounce them in Spanish, the sounds are different. You have to learn how to pronounce the letters and words correctly so people can clearly understand what you say.

In this lesson, you will learn the Spanish alphabet, vowel sounds, pronunciation, and basic similarities and differences between English and Spanish sounds.
