Lección 1.5 - Greeting Others

What do you say when you meet someone? Do you already know a common Spanish greeting?  (¡Hola! ¿por ejemplo?)

In Spanish, there are three different ways to greet someone depending on the time of day - this is much more important in Spanish than English.

When would you say the 3 greetings you see below?

Buenos días
Buenos días means "Good morning" or "Good day" and generally covers from 6:00 AM to noon.

It is customary to shake hands with everyone upon meeting, greeting, and again when you leave. In Spanish-speaking countries, the proximity between people shaking hands is generally much closer than it is in North America.

Male and female friends also greet each other in most of Latin America by brushing cheeks as a kiss.
Buenas tardes
Buenas tardes means "Good afternoon." The use of this term can vary from country to country. In Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America, it covers from noon to 6:00 or 7:00 PM. In Spain, you may say "buenas tardes" until 9:00 PM if it is still light outside. However, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, we usually begin to say buenas noches, used as "Good evening." The indicator is when the sun sets.
Buenas noches
Buenas noches means "Good evening" or "Good night" and refers to sundown until 2:00 AM. La madrugada, or the "wee morning hours," refers to the remaining hours until sunrise.
¡Bienvenidos a España!
When you go to the Next Page - you will imagine that you are greeting and meeting people in Spain for the first time. What would you say? You would use a different greeting based on the time of day. You will also encounter how you might introduce yourself with Me llamo, or Soy - we learn the details of these soon.
