3.2 Possessive Adjectives - Part 1

You must have noticed some extra new words in the sentences on the Flashcards this lesson - por ejemplo - Sus ojos son azules. These are Possessive Adjectives.
You can use possessive adjectives to tell who owns something or describe a relationship between people or things. In Spanish, possessive adjectives must agree in number with the nouns they describe and, in the case of the possessive adjectives "our" and "your (familiar)" they must also agree in gender. Read the possessive adjectives and select the word to hear the correct pronunciation.

Singular Possessive Adjectives
mi    my nuestro (a)    our
tu    your (familiar)
tu
When the word tu is used as possessive adjective, it doesn't have an accent
vuestro (a)    your (familiar)
su    your (formal/usted) su    your (formal/ustedes)
su    his, her, its su    their

Examples

Mi madre es inteligente.

Tu padre es cΓ³mico.

Su hermano es amable.

Nuestro abuelo es viejo.

Su hijo es alto.

Plural Possessive Adjectives
mis    my nuestros (as)    our
tus    your (familiar) vuestros (as)    your (familiar)
sus    your (formal/usted) sus    your (formal/ustedes)
sus    his, her, its sus    their

Remember, in Spanish, possessive adjectives agree in number with the nouns they describe. If the noun is plural, the possessive adjective must be plural too. Possessive adjectives also need to agree in gender in the case of the possessive adjectives " our" and "your (familiar)". This is different than in English, so it will take a little practice.

Examples

Mi abuela es inteligente.    β†’ My grandma is intelligent.

Mis abuelas son inteligentes.    β†’ My grandmothers are intelligent.

Notice that in both of the English sentences we use "my". But in Spanish, we change from mi to mis when the noun (abuelas) is plural.

Here are some more examples.

Mis hermanas son altas.

Tus hijas son perezosas.

Sus papΓ‘s son generosos.

Nuestras abuelas son viejas.

Sus padrastros son responsables.

This was a lot of new information - now time for practice!
