3.2 Verb Tener - More family descriptions

You have learned the verbs ser and estar to describe people in Spanish.

In the Vocabulary introduction in this lesson - you were introduced to descriptions using a new verb - tener:
(3.2 - Vocabulario - Descriptions -How are you feeling?)

We also use the verb tener (to have) in descriptive sentences, for example:  I have brown eyes - Yo tengo ojos marrones.

We will use it in many other situations as well - to talk about things you have / own / posses Yo tengo una bicicleta grande.

We use it to talk about the family members we have: Yo tengo una hermana.

*Ojo -
did you notice the word order in the examples above? Adjectives come after the things they are describing:
 ojos azules, bicicleta pequeña

This is the  third "irregular" verb so far. Look at and listen to the conjugation of the verb tener.

tener →    to have
Yo tengo  Nosotros/Nosotras tenemos
Tú tienes  Vosotros/Vosotras tenéis
Él/Ella/Usted tiene  Ellos/Ellas/Uds tienen

*The Yo form of tener looks different than the other forms, but it still has that ever present letter 'o' in the Yo form:
Yo tengo.

Example Sentences: Listen and Practice:
Yo tengo ojos verdes.  Yo no tengo pelo largo.

*Word order alert  - Remember that in Spanish the adjectives (verde) comes after the nouns (eyes).

Notice how agreement works with these adjectives:
verdes is plural like ojos / largo is masculine like pelo
Luis tiene el pelo corto.
¿Tienes tú ojos marrones?
Ellos tienen una familia grande.

*Notice the spelling change (ie) in these 3 forms.

We also use this to talk about how many family members we have.

Example sentences:
Listen and Practice:
¿Cuántas personas tienes en tu familia?
Yo tengo 5 personas en mi familia.
¿Cuántos hermanos tienes tú?
Yo no tengo hermanos, pero tengo muchos primos.
