3.6 The Verb Ser


You have already seen some of the verb ser; now it is time for you to learn all of the verb ser - and become comfortable using it correctly in different situations. 
The verb ser (to be) is truly an irregular verb. (There are actually only 2 truly irregular verbs - you encounter the second one in Unit 4).

Look at and listen to the conjugations - repeat the sentences (oraciones) to practice and get them in your auditory memory file  ;)

Yo soy  I am Yo soy inteligente. 
Tú eres (informal)  You are Tú eres inteligente. 
Usted es (formal)  You are Usted es inteligente. 
Él/Ella es  He/She is Él/Ella es inteligente. 
Nosotros(as) somos  We are Nosotros(as) somos inteligentes. 
Vosotros(as) sois  You (informal plural) are Vosotros(as) sois inteligentes. 
Ustedes son  You (formal plural) are Ustedes son inteligentes. 
Ellos/Ellas son  They are Ellos/Ellas son inteligentes. 

Usage

Ser can be used with nouns, adjectives, and expressions usually indicating something permanent or long term:

Escucha y lee...

Ella es muy bonita. → She is very pretty.

Ellos no son altos. → They are not tall.
Mi abuelo es doctor. → My grandfather is a doctor.

Nosotras somos enfermeras. → We are nurses.
Tú eres colombiana. → You are Colombian.

Mi profesor es de Venezuela. → My teacher is from Venezuela.
Somos inteligentes y simpáticos. → We are intelligent and nice.

Ustedes son perezosos. → You are lazy.
Hoy es lunes. → Today is Monday.

Son las dos de la tarde. → It is two o'clock in the afternoon.
