4.3 Conjugating —er and —ir Verbs


Conjugating —er and —ir verbs is done in the same way as with the —ar verbs, but with different verb endings. Knowing how to conjugate the —ar verbs will help you learn these new —er and —ir verb endings! Follow these steps to conjugate regular —er and —ir verbs in the present tense.

—es vosotros(as) —éis
él, ella, Ud. —e ellos, ellas, Uds. —en
Let's look at an example with the verb beber (to drink)

Singular Plural
Yo bebo

I drink Nosotros bebemos
Nosotras bebemos

We drink
We (fem.) drink
bebes

You (familiar) drink Vosotros bebéis

You all (familiar) drink
Él bebe
Ella bebe
Usted bebe

He drinks
She drinks

The endings for regular —ir verbs in the present tense are shown below.

Endings for regular –ir verbs
yo —o nosotros(as) —imos
—es vosotros(as) —ís
él, ella, Ud. —e ellos, ellas, Uds. —en

Notice that the only differences between the —er endings and the —ir endings are in the nosotros and vosotros forms.
Let's look at an example using the —ir verb abrir (to open)
