4.5 The Verb Ir

The verb ir (to go) is one of the most useful verbs in the Spanish language. We use it to talk about where we're going.

The verb ir is an irregular verb. This means that it doesn't follow the same conjugation patterns as other regular verbs. Don't be confused - this is NOT an - ir verb like vivir.

Although it is irregular, it will be easy for you to remember because it will be a verb that you use often.  If you remember the verb SER  (Yo soy), that will help get you started.

SER and IR are really the only two irregular verbs in Spanish.

 Ir means - to go
Take a look at how ir is conjugated. Make sure you listen to the pronunciation with the sound files as well.

Pronoun Conjugation Pronoun Conjugation
yo voy  nosotros/nosotras vamos
tΓΊ vas  vosotros/vosotras vais
Γ©l/ella/usted va  ellos/ellas/ustedes van

Rule 1

The verb ir is always followed by the preposition "a" which means "to."

Examples

Yo voy a la iglesia.    β†’ I go to church.

TΓΊ vas a la biblioteca    β†’ You go to the library.

Γ‰l va a la farmacia.    β†’ He goes to the pharmacy.

Rule 2

When using ir a before a masculine noun, the a combines with el to make the contraction al (a + el = al).

Examples

Nosotros vamos al parque.    β†’ We go to the park.
Since el parque is masculine, the a combines with el to form al.

Ellas van al centro comercial.    β†’ They go to the mall.
Since el centro comercial is masculine, the a combines with the el to form al.

Yo voy al museo.    β†’ I go to the museum.
Since el museo is masculine, the a combines with the el to form al.
