4.6 - Lección - Places in the Community
Introduction
¿Dónde se usa el idioma español en nuestras comunidades?
Sometimes you will see the Spanish language on restaurant menus. For example, you may see the word taco or tortilla even when you aren’t in a Mexican restaurant. Pay close attention to the menu next time you are in a restaurant and see
if you can find some Spanish words.

There are several channels on TV that broadcast only in Spanish. These are local channels that are available even without cable service. Next time you are channel surfing, stop at one of the Spanish channels and listen to a program
or watch a commercial in Spanish. See what you can understand. You might be surprised!

Many local churches offer services or newsletters in Spanish. See if a local church in your community offers Spanish services. If the church is in a neighborhood with a lot of Spanish speakers, they may also post signs about their services
in Spanish so community members know when to participate.
Museums are places that receive many visitors from all over the world. You will often see signs, information, and maps in Spanish around the museum. Next time you visit a museum, try reading the Spanish signs, maps, or brochures and see
what you learn.

Can you think of other places where you might see Spanish language in your everyday environment?
Do you know that Edmonton and Calgary have large Spanish-speaking populations?
This means restaurants and stores with interesting food and products.
Maybe soon it's time for una excursión de familia - a mini family field trip....
