5.4 The Preposition a

The preposition "a  in Spanish usually means to or for

(You encountered it when it means at when you learned time  - La clase es a las tres de la tarde)

The "a" goes before direct objects that specify who a pronoun is referring to or to place emphasis in speech.

Let's revisit our previous examples:

  1. Mi papá le da las flores a mi mamá  → a mi mamá = to my mom
  2. Nosotros les damos el chocolate a mis abuelos  → a mis abuelos = to my grandparents
  3. Yo te doy los juguetes a ti  → a ti = to you

a él  to/for him a nosotros/as  to/for us
a ella  to/for her a vosotros/as  to/for you all
a usted  to/for you (formal) a ellas  to/for them (feminine)
a ellos  to/for them (masculine)

When you use the expression a mí (me), there is an accent on the i. When you use the word mi (my) in an expression such as a mi mamá, there is no accent.
