8.1 Stem-changing —ar Verbs
Do you remember how to use the verbs prefiero and juego? Did you wonder why the e in preferir changed to ie (prefiero) when you conjugated it? Or why the u in jugar changed to ue (juego)? Some verbs have a vowel in the stem that changes when they are conjugated.
These verbs are called stem-changing verbs.
The verbs cerrar, empezar, and pensar are e → ie stem-changing verbs because the stem changes from e to ie.
Notice that the stem in nosotros and vosotros does not change. Select the title of each tab to learn more.
Cerrar
Examples Ana cierra la puerta. → Ana closes the door. Nosotros cerramos el libro. → We close the book. Empezar
Examples ( notice the extra word a in between the 2 verbs - a follows empezar) Yo empiezo a estudiar por la mañana. → I begin to study in the morning. Tú empiezas a hacer la tarea en la clase. → You start to do the homework in class. Pensar
Examples Ellos piensan ir al centro comercial. → They plan to go to the mall. Usted piensa ver un DVD. → You plan to watch a DVD.
