8.1 Stem-changing —er and —ir Verbs
You have learned that some —ar verbs are stem-changing and they change from e → ie. Now we are going to take a look at —er and —ir verbs that are also stem-changing verbs.
The verbs perder, querer, and preferir are also (e → ie) stem-changing verbs. These verbs end in —er or —ir. Just like other stem-changing verbs, the nosotros and vosotros forms do not have a stem change.

8.1 Multiple Verbs in a Sentence
Hopefully by now you are aware of a verb pattern that we have been using since Unit 2. When we have 2 verbs in a sentence, do you know what form the second one is in?

Perder
Examples Yo pierdo en los juegos de mesa. → I lose at board games. Tú pierdes el libro. → You lose the book. Querer
Examples Usted quiere pasar el rato con sus amigos. → You want to spend time with your friends. Nosotros queremos ir a la piscina. → We want to go to the swimming pool. Preferir
*Preferir is an —ir verb therefore the nosotros form is preferimos with an i. Examples Yo prefiero mandar mensajes de texto. → I prefer to send text messages. Ustedes prefieren hablar por teléfono. → You prefer to talk by telephone. Take the time to write these sentences out in a notepad or on paper using the following words.
