8.2 El Verbo Ir - Repaso importante

Remember, the verb ir means to go. It is an irregular verb because it doesn't follow a clear pattern.
This is an important review for your Final Exam.   Here are the forms for ir.

ir → to go
Yo voy  Nosotros / Nosotras vamos
Tú vas  Vosotros / Vosotras vais
Él/Ella/Usted va  Ellos/Ellas/Uds van

Examples

¿Cómo vas al cine?

Voy al cine en autobús.

Review - the Preposition a  / al

Use the preposition a after a form of ir to mean "to." Remember, when a is followed by el, the two words combine to form al.

Examples

Ana va a la piscina.

Nosotros vamos al centro comercial.

Travel

To say how you're going to travel to a particular place, use a form of ir and one of the expressions you just learned.

Examples

¿Cómo vas al cine?

Voy a pie.

¿Cómo van los muchachos?

Van en carro.

The expressions for modes of transportation are idioms: expressions that you cannot translate directly from one language to another.

Rollover each word to learn more: a pie, en autobús, en bicicleta, en carro.
a pie
The word pie means foot. Notice that a pie is the only expression that uses the preposition a. All the others use en.
en autobús
The word autobús means bus and is a masculine noun. In Mexico, un autobús is often called un camión. In Cuba and Puerto Rico, it is called una guagua.
en bicicleta
Sometimes the expression en bicicleta is shortened to en bici.
en carro
The word carro means car. In Latin America, most people use the word carro. In Spain, they use un coche instead.

Review of FUTURE - ir + a + infinitive

You can also use ir followed by a and an infinitive to say what someone is going to do.

Examples

¿Van a salir ustedes esta tarde?

Sí, vamos a salir. Vamos a ir al cine.
