Regular —ar Verb
In English, just like in Spanish, verbs are conjugated to agree with the person who is doing the action.
For example, let's take a look at the infinitive verb "to study" in English. Here is how we conjugate the verb to study:
to study | |||
I | study | We | study |
You | study | You | study |
He, She, It | studies | They | study |
As you can see, the only form that is different is the third person singular he, she, and it. In Spanish all the forms are different.
Let's take a look at the infinitive verb mirar, which means to watch or to look. To conjugate this verb, first we take off the ending —ar from mirar. We are left with the stem: mir. We keep this stem and add an ending to specify who is doing the action.
mirar → to watch/to look
Yo | mir + o = miro | I look | Nosotros/as | mir + amos = miramos | We look |
Tú | mir + as = miras | You look | Vosotros/as | mir + áis = miráis | You (plural informal) look |
Él/Ella/Usted | mir + a = mira | He looks, She looks, You look | Ellos/Ellas/Uds | mir + an = miran | They look |
In Spanish, subject pronouns are not required since each person has a different ending. You can say yo miro or just miro. The o at the end of miro it is only used for yo; therefore, it is not required to use the subject pronoun.
Now you try it! Here is the verb participar. First you need to take off —ar and you have the stem particip. We keep this stem and add the new endings.
participar → to participate
Yo | particip___ | I participate | Nosotros/as | particip___ | We participate |
Tú | particip___ | You participate | Vosotros/as | particip___ | You (plural informal) participate |
Él/Ella/Usted | particip___ | He/She participates, You participate | Ellos/Ellas/Uds | particip___ | They participate |
participar → to participate
Yo | particip + o = participo | I participate | Nosotros/as | particip + amos = participamos | We participate |
Tú | particip + as = participas | You participate | Vosotros/as | particip + áis = participáis | You (plural informal) participate |
Él/Ella/Usted | particip + a = participa |
He, She participates
You participate |
Ellos/Ellas/Uds | particip + an = participan | They participate |
