Lesson 2: Converting Between SI Units - Metric Conversions

   Constructing Knowledge

In this Lesson, you will explore two methods for converting between metric units. The first strategy uses a proportion, and can be used to convert between any pair of units, metric or not. The second strategy uses the fact that metric units are related by powers of 10. The second strategy can only be used with metric units.

Before reading any further, try to use the prefix table from the previous section to complete the following conversions. If possible, compare your strategy to that of another student.

  • 25 L = __________ dL
  • 157 mm = __________ m
  • 12 kg = __________ mg
