Lesson 2: Converting Between SI Units - Move the Decimal Point Example 2
EXAMPLE 2
Use the decimal point strategy to complete the following conversion.
How many centigrams are there in 25 hectograms?
Solution
0.01 hg = 100 cg
Move the decimal 4 places to the right to convert from hectograms to centigrams.
25 hg = 250 000 cg
When using any conversion strategy, it is always important to ask "Is this new measurement reasonable?" For example, if 20 km is converted to 0.0020 m, you would know this is not correct because there should be more than 1 metre in 20 kilometres!
Now, it is your turn! Complete the questions in your Chapter 5, Lesson 2 Practice Makes Perfect that refer to Move the Decimal Point.
