Lesson 3: Imperial Units and Conversion - Multiple Units 2

   Constructing Knowledge

To convert from a measurement with one unit to a measurement with multiple units, determine the number of larger units that fit within the given measurement, and then determine how many of the smaller units are left over.

EXAMPLE 1

Convert 91 inches into feet and inches.

Solution

Step 1: There are 12 inches in a foot so divide 91 by 12 to determine the number of full feet in 91 inches.

\(\frac{91}{12}=7.58\)

There are 7 full feet in 91 inches.

Step 2: Convert 7 feet to inches and subtract from 91 to determine the number of inches left over.

\(\begin{align} \frac{y}{7\,\text{ft}}&=\frac{12\,\text{in}}{1\,\text{ft}} \\ \\ \frac{y}{\cancel{7\,\text{ft}}}\times \cancel{7\,\text{ft}}&=\frac{12\,\text{in}}{1\,\cancel{\text{ft}}}\times 7\cancel{\text{ft}} \\ \\ y&=84\,\text{in} \end{align}\)

Of the 91 inches, 84 inches make up the 7 feet.

Step 3: Calculate the number of inches not included in the 7 feet.

91 in - 84 in = 7 in

So, 91 inches is equivalent to 7 feet 7 inches.

EXAMPLE 2

Convert 199 feet to yards and feet

Solution

Step 1: There are 3 feet in a yard, so divide 199 by 3 to determine the number of full yards in 199 feet.

\(\frac{199}{3}=66.\overline{3}\)

Step 2: Convert 66 yards to feet.

\(\begin{align} \frac{y}{66\,\text{yd}}&=\frac{3\,\text{ft}}{1\,\text{yd}} \\ \\ \frac{y}{\cancel{66\,\text{yd}}}\times \cancel{66\,\text{yd}}&=\frac{3\,\text{ft}}{1\,\cancel{\text{yd}}}\times 66\cancel{\text{yd}} \\ \\ y&=198\,\text{ft} \end{align}\)

Step 3: Calculate number of feet not included in 66 yards

199 ft - 198 ft = 1 ft

So, 199 feet is equivalent to 66 yards and 1 foot.
