Lesson 3: Imperial Units and Conversion - Multiple Units 3
Constructing Knowledge
Another way to convert from a measurement with one unit to a measurement with multiple units is to use division with a remainder.
In fact, some calculators can be set to give a division answer as a whole number and remainder instead of a decimal number.
EXAMPLE 1
Convert 66 ounces to pounds and ounces.
Solution
There are 16 ounces in a pound, so divide 66 by 16 and state the remainder.
\(\frac{66}{16}=\text{4R2}\)
66 oz = 4 lbs 2 oz
There are 4 pounds and 2 ounces in 66 ounces.
EXAMPLE 2
Convert 9000 yards to miles and yards
Solution
There are 1760 yards in 1 mile, so divide 9000 by 1760 and state the remainder
\(\begin{align} \frac{9000}{1760}&=\text{5R200} \\ \\ 9000\,\text{yd}&=\text{5 mi 200 yd} \\ \end{align}\)
There are 5 miles and 200 yards in 9000 yards.
