Lesson 1 - Perimeter and Circumference
You may have heard the phrase 'set up a perimeter' used in crime scenes in a movie or television program. This means set up a barricade around the crime scene. The perimeter is the distance around the barricades.
In track and field, for races over 100 metres, the starting blocks are staggered as shown in the image on the right. Have you ever wondered why? The perimeter of each lane gets larger as you move to the outer lanes of the track. To compensate for increased distance in the outer lanes, the starting blocks for these lanes are moved ahead. Thus, the total distance that each runner travels is the same at the finish line.
