Area is the measure of the size of a two-dimensional surface. The screen of a television or the rug on a floor cover a certain amount of space, or area. One of the most common uses of area is when referring to the square footage of a house or apartment. The square footage will tell a person the size of the footprint of the space.

Being able to calculate square footage becomes important when purchasing items like carpet, tile, hardwood flooring, etc. These items are usually sold by the square foot or square metre.
