Kinds of Assessment

Formative

In grades, you'll see that formative assessments are weighted at zero. This means that they have no affect on your average. You are required to complete the formative assessments so your teacher can give feedback so that you can strengthen your work so you will be more successful in completing the summative (graded) assignments. These formative assessments are a very important part of the process as they allow you to try new ways of completing assignments without affecting your grades. The formative assessments are “marked” out of 5; your mark out of 5 represents the following:
  • 5—excellent
  • 4—proficient
  • 3—basic
  • 2—developing
  • 1—underdeveloped
Please keep in mind that the grade for the planning only relates to the planning; how well you incorporate the feedback in the actual assignment is what will affect your summative grade.

It is expected that you will read, consider, and apply the suggestions to your future assignments. If you submitted your assignments online, this also means checking for feedback files. Learning cannot happen if you do not review all of the material, including the valuable feedback that is provided to you.

Summative

These assignments indicate an assignment that is assessed for marks. Feedback provided on these assignments should also be reviewed, considered, and applied in future assignments, as it indicates that you are learning!
