Symbols
Symbols are a layer hidden within a text and often go unnoticed at first. A literary device that is composed of many layers of meaning, symbols represent other aspects, concepts, or traits than those on the visible level. For example, "a new dawn," literally means a new day. However, it also symbolizes a new start, a chance for a fresh beginning, and/or the end of a previous time that may have been tiring or unpleasant.
Symbols reflect an understanding that goes beyond a literal interpretation of events or the action: they represent an idea, a feeling, or an emotion.
