Welcome to Grade 5 Language Arts!

In this course, you will read, view, discuss, and write about a variety of interesting topics.


Six units are devoted to respect, studying advertising, discovering the wonders of how the human body works, thinking about different types of games, mystery stories, and the exploration of our country, Canada.

As a student studying Language Arts through distance learning, you will work independently much of the time. However, you may contact your teacher when you have a question or need help with an assignment.

    • Dates significant to students may be recorded on their online calendar.

    • Key words and their definitions used throughout the course are arranged alphabetically and kept here for easy access. Hover over glossary words that appear in yellow throughout the course to see their definition as you read.

  • Private Files
    • Students are expected to store their work on their personal computer, which they can access anytime regardless of any technology outages. However, they may store their course work in “Private Files” to share with their teacher before submitting for a grade.

  • News
    • The teacher posts current and important information about the course in this area for students to read. Other information, such as planned technology outages and school closure and vacation dates are posted here as well.


  • Assignments
    • All required activities in the course are listed here. Students easily can see if any have been missed.

    • Students may view grades received to track their progress by viewing grades received in this area.

Course Instruction


Instruction in every unit is arranged to help you know what you are going to learn and why that is important in daily life. Icons, or little pictures, will help you recognize a specific kind of task or activity throughout the course.

Learning Goals


Learning Goals are your targets for learning about reading, writing, and other forms of literacy. Learning Goals are clearly stated at the beginning of each unit and reviewed at the end of the unit.

All the Units in Language Arts 5 will have Essential Questions to guide your work.


An Essential Question appears at the top of every page in each unit. These questions will get you thinking and every lesson will help you work to answer the question. As well, learning goals and questions to answer will be a part of your work. As you work through the lessons, you will often stop and reflect on the Essential Question and the goals of the unit.

When you finish the unit, you will review the work you completed and reflect on your progress

Every unit will have the following:


  • your Reader's Notebook reflections
  • online charts and organizers to keep things organized
  • Vocabulary work for new words, sentences, definitions, and images which is not for marks
  • a variety of digital tools for finding information and completing assignments
  • assignments and self-assessments to be handed in to your teacher via submission pages
  • at the end of the course there will be a final exam
