Unit 2

How Do Advertisements Influence People?

 Activity: Reader's Notebook

Viewing Advertisements; pp. 66-68

Read pages 66-67 Selling Shoes and Style of Literacy in Action 5A.

There are many advertising techniques listed on p. 67 that use large words such as animation. If you did not know what animation meant, you could use the dictionary or Internet to find out.

If you want to know the meaning of animation, look up the root word which is animate.  (Animate is made up of the root word plus a suffix -tion).

Following the word is information called the entry.  The entry tells us how to pronounce the word, the part of speech (noun, verb, etc.), and then the meaning.  If there are multiple meanings, they are numbered.  Often, a sample sentence will be provided so that you can learn the word in context.

An entry for animate might look like this:

anยทiยทmate verb /หˆanษ™หŒmฤt/
1. bring to life. "The desert is like a line drawing waiting to be animated with color."
2. give (a movie or character) the appearance of movement using step by step photographs of drawings or models.

adjective /หˆanษ™mษ™t/ 1. alive or having life.  "All of creation, animate and inanimate waited for the morning."
