Lesson 1: What Makes up the Human Body?
Completion requirements
Unit 3
How Does the Human Body Work?
Activity: Reader's Notebook
Systems are made of individual parts that work together. If one part of the system is broken, the system will not work well or may break down completely. The human body is a complex system of interdependent parts that work together. Understanding how these complex parts work help us to understand the whole system and how various systems are connected.

Cells are organized to
work together. Groups of similar cells that have a common purpose form a tissue.
Groups of tissues that have a common purpose are organized into organs. Several different types of tissues make up organs. Some examples of body organs include the heart, lungs, skin, eye, and brain. Groups of organs with a common purpose form an organ system. The body is made uf many systems.

Body Systems
Throughout this unit you will be completing lessons that examine body systems. Download the KWL chart below.

You will be learning how the body works by exploring information about how body systems work together and about ways to keep them healthy.
Websites
The human body is made up of over 10 different body systems but the ones you will be learning about are the:
- circulatory system (heart and blood vessels)
- respiratory system (lungs)
- skeletal system (bones)
-
muscular system (muscles)
- integumentary system (hair, skin and nails)
- nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves, eyes, ears, nose - brain controls voluntary and involuntary movement)
Click on each link to learn more about each body system.
You will also learn about cells and what forms the systems, DNA/Genes.
Websites
You may have heard of some of the other body systems. They include:
- digestive system (how your body processes food)
- immune system (how your body fights off diseases)
- endocrine system (regulates body growth)
- lymphatic system (helps the immune system get rid of waste, debris)
Click on each link to learn more about each body system.
- Download the document KWL Chart.

- Click the "Open with" button.
- Select "Adobe Reader".
- Click "OK".
- You will then be able to view the document KWL Chart.
- Print the document.
- Enter your name and the topic: body works
- In the chart you see, K stands for what you know, W stands for what you want to learn, and L stands for what you have learned.
-
Fill out the chart under What I Know:
- What do you know about the human body already?
- Have you ever had an injury?
- Think about the human body and how it works.
- Write down your ideas. Add each idea by clicking + Add Heading.
-
Fill out the chart under What I want to know:
- What questions do you have about the human body?
- What do you hope to learn about the Essential Question?
- Leave the last section What I learned blank for now. You will complete it at the end of the unit.
- You will use this worksheet again later.
Think About It
Once you have finished with the KWL Chart, list three questions you have about the human body that you would like to have answered by the end of this unit.
