Unlocking Word Meanings
Prefixes and Suffixes
A prefix is a word, letter or number placed before a root word that changes the meaning of the word. An example of a prefix are the letters "un". If you add the letters "un" to the word cover you make the word uncover. The word now means the opposite of what it did originally.
A suffix is is a word part added to the end of a word to change its meaning. An example of a suffix are the letters "ed". By adding this suffix to the word jump, you create the word jumped. The word changes from meaning something that is happening now, to something that occurred in the past.
