Activity
Gathering and Reviewing Information
There are many different sources of information for your report:
- Non-fiction books: encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, newspapers, magazines, research books
- Internet: information on many different web pages
While you are gathering information, remember these important points:
BrainPOP Log-In
Make notes about your chosen research question. If you don't make notes, you may forget the information.
Watch this video about taking notes to help you get started. It talks about listening, but the same strategies work when we are reading or viewing, too.

BrainPOP Log-In
Make sure you understand the information, and write down key ideas with supporting details in your own words. (It is very important not to copy other people's work. This is called plagiarism, and it is illegal.)
This video on citing sources will help you get started.

Websites
Look at the information, author (should be reliable), and the date of the source (it should be current) to make sure the information is accurate and true. (This is especially important when using sources on the Internet.)
Click each coloured row for information about the activity.
It is very important to keep track of the resources you use when researching any report or essay.
This is so you can let people know where you found the information and give credit to the people who already did the work writing the book, web page, etc. You will hand in your sources in the form of a bibliography with this report. Plagiarism (cutting and pasting off the Internet or from a book without writing the information in your own words) is unacceptable and will result in a score of 0 for this assignment.

The submission of your completed worksheet is an opportunity for
formative assessment by your teacher. Your teacher will review your work to check that you have chosen a worthy Canadian and have a good understanding of how to do your research.
- The documents you submit are NOT for marks.
-
Submit your completed Getting Ready for Research worksheet and your initial research
information. This will be your notes or your summary organizer, whichever you have chosen to gather your information. It does not need to be ALL of your research, just enough for your teacher to determine that you understand what researching a topic
involves. Submit this BEFORE you think you are finished so that your teacher can help you if necessary.
- Click on the Add Submission button to upload your documents.
