The three reading strategies you have been using to make meaning of opinions are using what you know, visualizing, and synthesizing. You will practise using these strategies when you read Have Your Say! - Team Sports: Go for It!

For example, when you use what you know, you often ask questions - you are using two reading strategies together. (Asking questions is a reading strategy you have practiced in previous units). Good readers choose strategies that will best help them - they work with more than one strategy at a time. You will be using what you know and visualizing at the same time when you read this article.

You are going to be reading this selection one paragraph at a time in order to get a complete list of the main ideas of this opinion selection.


Read the first paragraph on page 14 of Literacy in Action 5B. This is the introductory paragraph that tells you the main idea of the entire selection. On the Reader’s Notebook: Have Your Say! - Team Sports: Go for It! page, write down the main idea of the paragraph, and one detail that surprised you.

Continue to fill in the During Reading chart by providing the main idea and one detail that surprised you for each of the five paragraphs.

Once you have written down the main idea and one detail that surprised you for each paragraph, answer the last question in the During Reading section on the Reader’s Notebook: Have Your Say! - Traditional Games: Fun and Important worksheet.

Reread each paragraph, trying to visualize what the author is describing to help increase your understanding of the selection.
Answer the remainder of the questions on your Team Sports: Go for It! worksheet.
