Unit 4

How Do Games Influence People?

Activity

Have Your Say! - Team Sports: Go for It! Organizer

A well-written opinion statement makes a claim.

An opinion statement is the main idea of a piece of writing. It must be supported with reasons and evidence. Reasons tell the importance of the opinion or claim. Why does the author hold this idea? Supporting details or evidence are researched facts or experiences that back up or support the reason. These details can be proven.

Examine the following statements.

  • I did not like the book Messing About.
  • The book Messing About was awful because the plot was uneventful and all the characters were unrealistic.

Although both statements tell you that the writer does not like the book, the second statement is much more descriptive. It gives reasons for the writer to not like the book.

Every paragraph in the selection, Have Your Say! - Team Sports: Go for It! supports the author’s opinion with reasons that identify why the writer has that opinion.

Complete this Assignment 4-1 Main Ideas Organizer by identifying the writer's opinion and three reasons that support that opinion. Identify three supporting details.
