The
selections you have read so far have been opinion articles.
Ideas in an opinion help readers understand what someone else believes and why they believe it. Some features of an opinion are:
- All the ideas and information are about the topic.
- The main idea is at the beginning.
- Specific details and examples make the information convincing, easy to relate to and remember.
- The writer sounds knowledgeable about the topic.
Most of the suggestions in the list tell about how ideas are used to make an opinion clear and understandable.

- If you had only three minutes to talk to a group of grade 4 students about games, what information would you give them?
- Why do you think they would be interested in learning that information?
- What information do you think they would be less interested in? Why?
