What Are the Traits of a Good Mystery?

Throughout this unit, you have read many different types of mystery stories:

  • Non-fiction
  • Detective stories
  • Graphic stories
  • Stories about mysterious places
  • Science fiction mysteries
  • Historical mysteries
  • Animal mysteries
  • Scary stories
  • Poetry


All of these mysteries are made up of many different traits, or characteristics. These traits all come together to make a mystery story great.

Think back through this unit to all the stories you have read, as well as to all the mystery stories you have watched and heard about.
