Unit 5

What Are the Traits of a Good Mystery?

Activity

It's a Mystery - End of Unit Activity

For your end of unit activity, you are going to finish writing your story.

All events in the story need to be important ones.  Do not include events that are uninteresting or do not advance the story.

To ensure your story has a purpose, make an event plan.  To select important events, write your story backwards.  Begin with the solution to the problem.  How did your character arrive at that solution? Write out each step.  Use the words because and so for each event.

A Mystery in the Woods

Character: A trapper named Muchalat Harry

Setting: The mysterious forest in BC holds a secret.

Harry has the perfect life working as a trapper in Northern BC along the coast.
However, when he finds a large footprint, he begins to realise that things are not quite as they seem. Will he find the solution before it is too late, or will his demise become another legend?

What does Harry want? To find the animal that made the footprint.

Solution: So, he never went trapping in that area of the woods again.

Because the creatures left the camp unguarded, then Harry ran to his canoe on the river.

Because their campsite was littered with large bones, Harry thought the creatures would eat him.

Because Harry was lost and sleeping, he did not notice when he was picked up by a large Sasquatch.

Because he is unfamiliar with this part of the woods, he becomes lost.

Because a barking dog and a large mysterious footprint leave him with some curious questions, Harry sets off to find some answers.
