Unit A: Geometry

Chapter 1: Polygons

Properties of Triangles

"Quadrilateral" may not be the first word that comes to mind when you see a four-sided polygon. Other names are more familiar such as square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, kite, diamond or trapezoid.

Think about some of the properties of squares and rectangles that make them so popular in architecture and construction. For example, squares and rectangles can be layered and piled easily, such as in tiling, brick laying, or stacking containers for shipping.

What are the properties of squares and rectangles that make them so useful in comparison to other quadrilaterals?

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to

  • describe properties of quadrilaterals with respect to
    • interior angle measures
    • side lengths
    • diagonal lengths
    • diagonal angles
