Step by step solutions are provided under the Solutions tab. You will learn the material more thoroughly if you complete the questions before checking the answers.

1.
A factory makes several different sizes of canned tomato products.

The large can of tomato sauce has a diameter of 5 . 4   cm  and a height of 9 . 1   cm . A scale factor of 0 . 25 is applied to the large can to create the small can of tomato paste. What are the dimensions of the small can after the dilation? Round the answer to 1  decimal place.

2.
Joe attaches miniature flags to toothpicks.

The current dimensions of his flags are 4 . 5   cm  by 2   cm . Joe would like to make a larger version of his flags on toothpicks. If Joe dilates the flags by 1 . 75 , what will be the new dimensions of the flags? Round your answer to 1  decimal place.

Since the scale factor is a number between 0 and 1 , this will be a reduction.

The diameter of the small can is
d = 5 . 4   cm × 0 . 25 = 1 . 4   cm

The height of the small can is
h=9.1 cm×0.25=12.4 cm

The diameter of the small can is 1 . 4   cm , and the height of the small can is 12 . 4   cm .

Since the scale factor is larger than 1 , this will be an enlargement.

The length of the large flag will be
l = 4 . 5   cm × 1 . 75 = 7 . 9   cm

The width of the large flag will be
w = 2   cm × 1 . 75 = 3 . 5   cm

The length of the larger flag will be 7 . 9   cm , and the width of the larger flag will be 3 . 5   cm .
