Step by step solutions are provided under the Solutions tab. You will learn the material more thoroughly if you complete the questions before checking the answers.

1.
Raymarko is building doll furniture for his sister's dollhouse. He measures the coffee table in his house and draws the following picture.

Would it be possible for him to build a similar coffee table that measures 4 inches wide by 8 inches long by 3 inches high?

2.
Are the hexagons similar?

1.
Raymarko is building doll furniture for his sister's dollhouse. He measures the coffee table in his house and draws the following picture.

Would it be possible for him to build a similar coffee table that measures 4 inches wide by 8 inches long by 3 inches high?

Step 1: Draw and label a diagram.

Step 2: Determine whether the tables are similar by calculating the scale factor for each dimension.

Length:
Scale   Factor = Dimension   of   Image Dimension   of   Original = 36 8 = 4 . 5

Width:
Scale   Factor = Dimension   of   Image Dimension   of   Original = 18 4 = 4 . 5

Height:
Scale   Factor = Dimension   of   Image Dimension   of   Original = 15 3 = 5

The scale factor for each dimension are not exactly the same. The small table will not be similar to the original table. Therefore, Raymarko will not be able to build a similar table with the specified measurements.
2.
Are the hexagons similar?

Step 1: Find the corresponding sides.

Each hexagon has four short sides that are identical in length. Each also has two long sides that are identical in length.

Side length 10 mm in the smaller hexagon corresponds to side length 15 mm in the larger hexagon.

Side length 14 mm in the smaller hexagon corresponds to side length 21 mm in the larger hexagon.

Step 2: Determine whether the hexagons are similar by calculating the scale factor for each dimension.
Scale   Factor   of   Short   Side = 15 10 = 1 . 5

Scale   Factor   of   Long   Side = 21 14 = 1 . 5

Since the scale factors are the same for all sides, the hexagons are similar.
